When we read the announcement that higher quality videos would come to Youtube we were delighted that the video quality would finally see an upgrade. Apparently the conversion has started and some videos are already available in different quality versions. It still looks like Youtube is testing settings and stuff and that not everyone can access those higher quality videos yet.

You can also bet that it takes some time to convert the 140+ million videos hosted on the website. The default video resolution is 320×200 and the two new resolutions that are tested are 448×336 and 480×360. To test it you only need to append the parameters &fmt6 for 448×336 or &fmt18 for 480×360 video resolutions.

Not all videos are converted as of yet and videos that have not are displaying the loading screen all the time.

The Software & Information Industry Association (SIIA) will now reward you with $500, if you catch software pirate red handed. If you purchase counterfeit software from online auction sites like eBay, then you might be eligible for this reward.

SIIA calls this campaign as "Don’t Get Mad, Get Even", and it will run from December 13, 2007 to January 30, 2008:

The first 100 individuals who inadvertently purchase counterfeit software on an auction site, complete an application to participate in the "Don’t Get Mad, Get Even" program, submit the application to SIIA by no later than 5 pm EST January 30, 2008 and satisfy all the eligibility requirements necessary to participate in the program, will be eligible to receive up to $500 from SIIA. The payment is intended to help the buyer purchase a legitimate copy of the software.

The counterfeit software must be from a company who has partnered with SIIA. Microsoft has not partnered with SIIA, which means… you won’t be eligible for $500, if you just purchased pirated copy of Vista from eBay. However, their partners list does include some big names like Apple, Adobe, Nero, Symantec and McAfee. Go try your luck on eBay to spot some pirated software!

Google, Zoho, ThinkFree probably think they're pretty cool because they let you create, edit, and share office documents online. But none has quite as many features as Microsoft Office or its open source competitor: OpenOffice.org.

Now there's a way to run a OpenOffice.org inside your web browser. No need to download and install anything (except for Java). Online desktop startup Ulteo has released a beta version of a web-based interface for OpenOffice.org 2.3. You can launch any OpenOffice application including Writer, Calc, Impress, Base, or Draw.

The application is quite obviously in beta. It loads slowly and it's kind of difficult to navigate between windows. But we dig the concept. The goal is to integrate OpenOffice.org with Ulteo's online desktop, which is currently only available to registered beta testers. Users will get 1GB of free online storage space and the ability to create and edit files from any computer with a web browser.

Ulteo also has a pretty decent pedigree. The company's chairman is Gael Duval, founder of Mandriva Linux.

A lot of websites mistakenly reported that the "g" stands for Gogole, because this stripped down operating system has direct links to a bunch of Google services like YouTube, Docs & Spreadsheets, and Blogger. But gOS is actually a stripped down "green" operating system based on Ubuntu.

And you don't need to buy a $199 PC to load it. You can download gOS right now. Unfortunately, the developer's site seems to be down at the moment, but you can find gOS on several Torrent trackers.

The ISO weighs in at 728 MB, making it a tight fit for a CD-R, but leaving plenty of room on a DVD-R. And like almost all Ubuntu-based operating systems, gOS comes as a LiveCD, meaning you can take it for a test drive without installing anything. Just boot your PC from the DVD. When you're done, shut down, pop the DVD out and reboot into Windows, Linux, or whatever you've been using up until now.

Microsoft Office’s Online Companion Announced

There are countless sites offering online office suites. Google Docs, and Zoho are few good ones to mention, but none of them have as many features as the commercially available Microsoft Office. However, the only negative aspect of Microsoft Office is that you cannot conveniently share the documents with your contacts over the internet. The only available option is to email your documents or store it in some media and carry it. In an effort to fill this gap, Microsoft has announced a new service called “Microsoft Office Live Workspace“.

It’s an online companion to Microsoft Office. Office users can use the new service to store their documents and share it. A user can control who can view, comment, and edit his documents. Unlike online office suites, Microsoft Office Live Workspace won’t let users edit the document through his browser; instead he will have to use Microsoft Office software to edit.

Microsoft has flawlessly integrated this new service with Microsoft Office. Users will be able to open, save or view the document from Word, Excel or PowerPoint. Microsoft Outlook users can synchronize contacts, tasks and event list.

As we all know, Microsoft Office is commercially available software. Users will have to buy Microsoft Office inorder to use Office Live Workspace. It’s pretty obvious that they won’t let you edit the document through your browser. The service is yet to be released into public beta, so you won’t be able to try it out.

In my opinion, it would have been better if they could have added an option to edit the documents through the browse. The service is anyhow intended to be used by Genuine Office users, so what’s the point in cutting down features? If they could work out some method to authenticate if the person who has signed up for the service is a genuine user, they can easily add this new option. Or maybe, they can even show some ads and allow users to edit documents from their browser. This way, they can earn revenues as well keep users happy. What do you think?

Finally, Google has launched beta version of their text messaging service in India. Mobile users can now use Google to access information on-the-move without using an internet-enabled mobile device.

Mobile users can use the service to check weather, movie show timings, search for businesses and more by sending text messaging their queries to 54664 ("5GOOG"). Supported mobile operators are Airtel, Aircel, BPL, BSNL and Reliance. Google SMS is a premium text messaging service, so it will cost you more than standard text messaging rate. GMail Drive is a Shell Namespace Extension that creates a virtual filesystem around your Google Gmail account, allowing you to use Gmail as a storage medium.

GMail Drive creates a virtual filesystem on top of your Google Gmail account and enables you to save and retrieve files stored on your Gmail account directly from inside Windows Explorer. GMail Drive literally adds a new drive to your computer under the My Computer folder, where you can create new folders, copy and drag'n'drop files to.

Ever since Google started to offer users a Gmail e-mail account, which includes storage space of 2000 megabytes, you have had plenty of storage space but not a lot to fill it up with. With GMail Drive you can easily copy files to your Gmail account and retrieve them again.
When you create a new file using GMail Drive, it generates an e-mail and posts it to your account. The e-mail appears in your normal Inbox folder, and the file is attached as an e-mail attachment. GMail Drive periodically checks your mail account (using the Gmail search function) to see if new files have arrived and to rebuild the directory structures. But basically GMail Drive acts as any other hard-drive installed on your computer.
You can copy files to and from the GMail Drive folder simply by using drag'n'drop like you're used to with the normal Explorer folders.

Because the Gmail files will clutter up your Inbox folder, you may wish to create a filter in Gmail to automatically move the files (prefixed with the GMAILFS letters in the subject) to your archived mail folder.

Usually, PC users love organizing their files into various folders. Sometimes we move our files from one folder to another, but we forget to delete the empty folder. In other cases, you install an application and then uninstall it, but it leaves behind some empty folders. Your system probably contains hundreds of dozens of folders, without a single byte of data in it. This is exactly where Remove Empty Directory (RED) comes into action.

This free application does exactly what the name says. It scans your drives or directories for empty folders and removes it. By default, it scans hidden folders, but ignores system folders to prevent any harm to your PC. It is also possible to integrate RED into Windows Explorer.

As a productivity junkie, I hate seeing too many empty folders, so I regularly delete unused files and empty folders. RED was still able to find 496 empty folders out of 15150 folders, which is quite a shocking number to me!

It’s pretty similar to Google’s Translator Tool, where you can enter a block of text and translate it into variety of languages like - German, French, Spanish, Italian, Japanese, Chinese Simplified and Chinese Traditional. Or you can enter the URL and get the entire web page translated.

Translating the URL in Google’s Translation Tool will show you the translated page in fullscreen view, but Windows Live Translator gives you an option to view the translated page in four different views. You can choose between side-by-side layout, which shows you the original and translated page side-by-side, or Top / Bottom layout, which shows one page on the top or another. I’m really cautious when I hear of websites that offers something in the line of “Take Surveys - Earn Money” because most of them seem to really rip of the users with ultra-high payout restrictions or just a few surveys which means that it takes ages to make some decent money.

CashCrate seems to be different, at least for users from the United States, Canada and the UK. Everyone may join but the availability of surveys and offers depends on your location. If you live in Germany or India for instance you see two surveys and two offers to join a service to receive some money from it.

Windows Live Hotmail offers 5 GB of Storage

Yahoo Mail took the lead by offering unlimited storage space to all users. Gmail has apparently started giving out 9 GB for some users. And now, it’s Microsoft’s turn. They have just announced some new improvements to Hotmail.

First and most importantly, they are now giving all users 5 GB of storage (10 GB to paid users). They’ve have also worked upon the performance and now it’s reasonably fast. Clean a DVD or CD Disc

Here are a few handy tips to clean your priceless collection of CDs and DVD discs.

But before you try any of these methods, remember that the disc media is very delicate and you may unintentionally damage the shiny reflective surface if you are not careful:

» If dust particles are sticking to the CD surface, use a piece of soft cloth to wipe off the dust. To hold the CD, insert a finger or thumb inside the center hole of the CD or handle it by the edges but never touch the shiny surface.

» If the DVD surface feels sticky or greasy, mix some baby shampoo in lukewarm water and use cotton or soft cloth to gently rub the CD surface with this solution. Make sure the CD is completely dry (no water drops) before putting it back in the jewel case.

» If there are fingerprint marks on the CD surface, dip a soft cloth in Isopropyl Alcohol/Ethanol/Methanol and gently wipe the surface. Never use a petroleum based solvent like Acetone as that will permanently damage the CD surface.

The list is divided into the categories benchmarkingand hardware tweaks. Benchmarking tools can be used to test the system before and after applying a tweak while the hardware tweak category links to programs that aid you in changing settings in the system.

3D Mark 06 Basic Edition - This tool is clearly aimed at gamers and provides some stunning visuals during the tests. You need to have excellent hardware to be able to enjoy the tests though.

HD Tune - A program that is benchmarking your hard drives and offering a way to compare results online.
PC Mark 05 Basic - Another utility from the makers of 3D Mark with a focus on the complete system and not only gaming performance.
Prime 95 - Prime 95 is an extremely popular freeware used by overclockers world wide. It can be used to make sure that your system runs stable after tuning for instance the RAM settings.
Sandra Lite - Sandra Lite tests the whole system and offers a way to compare the results with those from other users.

The autopatcher team finally managed to update all of their update packages for Microsoft operating systems to July 2007 which means that you can download all patches that Microsoft has released for your operating system and apply them at once instead of using automatic updates or connecting to a Microsoft server at all.

As always core and update packages are available. The core package contains all patches from the beginning to that month while the update packages contain only the updates of a month. If you never used autopatcher before you should start with the core update which is currently to May 2007 and apply the June and July updates afterwards.

This way you can efficiently patch your system. You do get a choice during installation and may uncheck several patches that do not affect your system. To make things easier, here are the links for the XP updates: May 2007 core, June 2007 update, July 2007 update.

Genbeta are reporting that you can get a free version of the Divx Pro suite for a limited amount of time. All you need to do is go to Windows download or Mac download and download the divx pro software. You are asked for an email address during installation which will be used to send the Divx pro key to. You probably want to uncheck the “I would also like to receive” offers.

The Divx pro serial will be send to the email that you have chosen during installation. To register the product copy the serial that is mentioned in the email and paste it into the Register Product window that can be accessed from the start menu. (Divx > Divx Converter > Register Products).

Microsoft has just expanded its book search service to bring it more in line with Google Book Search by adding a limited number of copyrighted works, with permission from major publishers. Up until now, most of the titles indexed had been in the public domain.

Panda NanoScan online virus scan

Panda NanoScan is a browser-based program that scans for viruses, trojans and spyware. Since the database sits on Panda's servers, there are definitions for you to download. You just need to install a 400kb plugin the first time you run NanoScan with Internet Explorer or Firefox.

NanoScan doesn't search every single file on your computer for malware. Instead it takes a look at all your active processes and a set of crucial files and folders. The result is a blazing fast inspection, which takes just about a minute to run. If you want a more complete scan, you can run Panda TotalScan, which is larger, takes longer, but performs a more thorough search.

The service also collects anonymous user data and displays the results online.

Now the downsides. There's no support for Vista yet, although it's in the works. Also, NanoScan and TotalScan find problems, they doesn't fix them. Obviously these browser-based solutions also don't offer real time protection if you download an infected file.

Google recently launched a test version of a translation application that allows user to make language conversion through internet. This translation software allows users to translates their queries to various languages such as French, Arabic, English, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, and traditional and simplified Chinese. Google reveal that this service will eventually be expanded to include other languages.

Krugle wants to be the Google of software code search and recently has started to become the go-to search site for open-source developers by partnering with important websites, including SourceForge.net, the leading site for open-source software projects, to include Krugle search.

Cofounder Ken Krugler says that Krugle resolves a very important problem for developers: They spend a lot of their time searching for lines of code to perform certain functions that may already exist on the web. Krugler says that there is no sense writing code that has already been written.

Software developers mainly visit SourceForge to find a project similar to the one they are doing but they sometimes have to download the whole project.

With Krugle they can search through the project to see if it useful for them without downloading it entirely.

"If you could save 10 percent of that [search] time off, that is a huge productivity improvement either in costs savings, revenue generation or just spare time."

Krugle's next project will be search for open-source development within enterprises: An enterprise product currently in beta is going to be released this year.

How to Hide files in JPG image?????

This trick is simple but it is really geeky. Did you know that you can hiding your files in JPG image? Here I will show you how. But before we can proceed, prepare our tools first.

Tools

* WinRAR
* Command Prompt
* Hidden files (Eg: password.txt)
* A JPG image file (Eg: nerd.jpg)

Ok, now we move on how to do this trick. Btw here is my nerd.jpg.

1. Put your hidden file and your image file in the same folder. Here I have password.txt and nerd.jpg. Both I put in a folder I named it Secret in drive D.

2. Put all these files into a RAR archive. I named this archive as Hidden.rar

3. Open Command Prompt and go to the folder where you place the files. Type the following command,

copy /b nerd.jpg + hidden.rar cool.jpg

where nerd.jpg is our original image file, hidden.rar is our RAR archive and cool.jpg is the JPG image file that we want to create.

4. Now you will have 4 files in the folder. nerd.jpg, password.txt, hidden.rar and cool.jpg

5. If you open cool.jpg file, you will see the same image like nerd.jpg.

6. If you open cool.jpg file with WinRAR, here is what you will get.

7. Try open the file with WinRAR and read what I wrote in the password.txt file.

Btw if you want to make it more secure, use encryption when you create the archive file.

Red Hat released Fedora 7 today, a new version of their Linux operating system developed in partnership with the open source community and Red Hat engineers. This is Fedora's first release to merge the Fedora Core and Fedora Extras package repositories under one set of packaging policies. Another first for Fedora 7 is all the software used is released under a free license, and all decision-making is made in public.

The big innovations touted for this release are:

Revisor tool - a graphical appliation built on top of Fedora's other build tools that gives flexibility to build an ISO, a live CD, etc. Mike Spevack, Fedora's project leader, feels this is Fedora's crown jewel. Customized versions of Fedora are now possible to an extent that was not available previously.

Live CD - first time for Fedora, (however not an industry shake-up here).

Kernel-based Virtual Machine (KVM) technology has been integrated with the Fedora graphical virtualization manager tool. KVM provides a full virtualization solution, and users have a choice between KVM and Xen, along with Qemu, in this release.

Firefox 2.0.0.4 released

All of you FireFox users (and there is a lot of us), today the next update for the 2.0 branch was released. Firefox 2.0.0.4 is available for download, and brings several important fixes. On the Windows side, several changes were made to Windows Vista support, though there are still a few unresolved issues such as a slightly broken IE7 migration and no WMP integration. Five security fixes have been included for all platforms, only one of which was rated critical, and a few other minor changes have been included. You can read the details in the 2.0.0.4 release notes, or you can just download it.

Trackmania Nations is a free racing game for Windows that distinguishes itself from normal racing games by introducing a number of additional elements to the tracks. Do you remember Stunt Car Racer for instance ? The game where you were driving through loopings and made big jumps across the screen.

This game introduces all those elements again to a racing game but provides normal tracks as well. You may start with the 90 solo missions that remind me a little bit of the Gran Turismo missions. They are divided into Beginner, Advanced and Expert Training missions and award medals if you beat the tracks in a certain amount of time. This alone is very challenging.

Besides the solo missions you can play Hot Seat, Lan and Internet as well. The real fun begins when playing on the Internet competing against human players. Several servers are suggested after connecting to the main server offering modes such as Time Attack and Rounds.

Players compete for the best time in the Time Attack mode while Rounds is basically a race for a certain amount of rounds. Team games also exist but I was not able to find out what they do.

You do need to download the game from the official site which transferred the game in great speed to my system and the latest Trackmania United patch after installing the game.

Google Launches Google Gears

At Google Developer Day 2007 on Thursday, Google is launching Google Gears, an “open source browser extension that enables web applications to provide offline functionality using JavaScript APIs”. Gears works across all platforms: Macs, Windows, and Linux with Firefox or IE, providing the ability to store and serve application resources locally, store data locally in a fully-searchable relational database and run asynchronous Javascript to improve application responsiveness. In short: it’s an easy way for developers to create web applications that work offline.

The first app to be “gears enabled” will be Google Reader, which will grab all your feeds when you’re online, and continue to work once you’re offline. If you read all your feeds while you’re disconnected, Reader will sync up once you reconnect, meaning all your online feeds are marked as read. This functionality is going to be extremely useful for web office apps that assume 100% connectivity - I can’t wait until GMail starts working offline.

Other launches at Developer Day include a new mashup editor that competes with Microsoft PopFly and Yahoo Pipes. Google’s attempt is a little less visual than the others, but the intention is the same. Last but not least, there’s a new version of Google Web Toolkit. For devs, Christmas came way early this year.

Joox.net is an online repository for videos–mostly television shows and movies that seemingly elude copyright agreements.

You can find quite a few episodes of The Simpsons, or Grey’s Anatomy, and the second half of Pirates of the Carribean 3: At World’s End. Content is added by Joox users, in what looks to be a somewhat complicated process. You’ll have to first play your video in the provided player, and add it to Joox directly from the player. The clip will need to be confirmed before becoming part of the Joox library, but you can still watch these upcoming videos. As Joox is probably not based in the U.S. (the domain is reportedly registered in Sweden), Joox may manage to avoid a few copyright infringement suits for a while. Also to keep in mind, you’ll need to download a divx file as Joox does not operate in flash, and doesn’t have the best quality either.

Deligio is a search engine that is dedicated to finding software, and has recently announced its launch.

Deligio is looking to provide the largest downloadable exchange worldwide, so providing relevant search results is key to the goals set out for the company. Beyond simply returning a list of results, you can see how other users have rated the software, and how many times it has been downloaded. Filter search queries by tag word or popularity. Viewing another user’s profile shows a list of their favorites, as well as a tag cloud. Users can submit software to be included in Deligio as well.

The community aspects of Deligio make this a recommendation service as well. In this regard, Deligio is much like a social bookmarking tool. This niche social search engine could be integrated into another search service, offering up search results based on the specifics of software. This tactic can prove fruitful if done correctly, which we’ve witnessed with blinkx for video search.

Deligio is similar to Wakoopa in its recommendation capabilities, and is similar in concept to SourceForge, which recently partnered with Krugle to power the search for SourceForge’s 145,000 open source projects.

Nokia has applied for a U.S. patent for a lightning detector system designed for use in mobile phones, adding a new feature that could detect imminent lighting strikes.
This involve the use of radio frequency receivers in the mobile phones, such as FM radio, Bluetooth, FM, tri-band GSM, Wi-Fi and RFID , to detect radio waves emitted by lightning. Typical lightning bolts produce frequencies between 10Hz and 5GHz.

A special software program designed by Nokia analyzes the signals, calculates the distance to the lightning and informs users of imminent strikes.

Details of the invention are available in the company's patent application.

"A lightning detector wherein the detector uses at least two separate channels or frequency bands for lightning detection, characterized in that the lightning detector is a mobile RF device provided with radio interfaces for at least two communication channels or frequency bands, whereby at least one of which is normally a telecom channel/frequency range and wherein these channels/ranges are used in lightning detection." (United States Patent Application)

According to the National Severe Storms Laboratory, an average of 67 people are killed by lightning each year and about 300 are injured.

With this innovation, looks like cell phones will no more remain only a communication and entertainment device, but will play the role of an indispensable safety device for people when they are out-of-doors.

A few days ago, Google Blogoscoped noticed a new YouTube player from a video that was embedded into a blog.

The new player appeared these days on several blogs and you may seen it already.

Youtube's new player will show you a thumbnail for recommended videos right within the player. You can also play those videos from the player instead of being directed to the YouTube site.

It seems that the guys from Youtube are making a very good job.
I enjoy the idea of being able to play the related videos right from the same player and the new look for the youtube player is just great.

Although Microsoft’s Service Pack roadmap page shows Windows XP SP3 to be released somewhere around the first half of 2008, it seems like they’ll released it by the end of this year. This news was hinted in a recent press release regarding their partnership with Juniper Networks. Here’s an excerpt of that press release:

Microsoft is announcing that Windows Vista supports this protocol today and Windows Server® 2008 and Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) will support it as well later this year. The Juniper Networks UAC solution is expected to support the new TNC standard in the first half of 2008.
